Yes, I am absolutely ashamed and disappointed. Why? Well, last Friday was the final day of the big COP15 Climate Change Conference in Denmark. World leaders were in Copenhagen from Dec. 7 – 18 in an attempt to create a global, legally binding treaty that would hold them to their commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and do something about the environmental crisis the world faces.
For months prior to COP15 there were news reports, there were protests, petitions and massive environmental events and public displays where people showed and screamed about how much they opposed Climate Change and demand something be done with it. Governments held meetings below the ocean surface and up in the Himalayan mountains to show the world how serious things have become. Even celebrities have gotten involved in the protests, the volunteer work, in music, artwork, auctions and simple video narrations. Millions of people the world over called for a changed. We asked for it, screamed for it, begged for it.
And after all is said and done, all the talk amounts to nothing. It amounts to only talk. There is no action. There is no treaty. There is only further postponing of the inevitable. I am absolutely disappointed in the governments and leaders of the world. I am ashamed of those who view Global Warming as nothing more than a conspiracy theory. It is a terrible thing to see all that effort go to waste. Those who tried their hardest and pushed the boundaries as much as they could should definitely be commended and praised. But those who couldn’t even meet the rest of the world halfway, you should be ashamed of yourself.
Our world is in peril. Resources are depleting faster than expected and time has run out. Nature can’t replenish everything until the end of time. Eventually, all the animals, plants, oil and so forth will be completely gone. Perhaps within our lifetime (at the rate things are going). When everything on this planet dies, what will you do? Where will you go? Do you think nothing of your ancestors, your people or your planet?
In order for there to even be a future of this planet, things need to be taken care of NOW. Serious environmental action can’t wait until later anymore, there is no more later. “Later” was entirely used up on the eve of Dec. 18, 2009. “Later” no longer exists in this situation.
If the governments and world leaders of the Earth are not going to take the ongoing environmental crisis seriously enough to do something major about it, then I certainly hope all the Eco-Warriors of the world will. You know who you are.
