Orange Juice Saves The World! (or at least the rainforests)

Many companies are trying to do something to help the environment these days. Maybe their factories are all solar powered. Maybe their workers help to restore wildlife habitat. Or maybe their delivery trucks are making the switch to EV. Whatever the case may be, it’s a growing phenomenon (and hopefully not the latest passing trend).

Jumping on the green wagon this time is Tropicana Juice. The company has already made great effort in recycling and reducing their carbon footprint. Now, their latest mission to save the earth involves help from you. [Read more...]

Fun With Seed Bombs!

Seed bombs are taking over the world!

No, wait, you can stop running. Seed bombs are actually a GOOD kind of bomb.

Imagine a bit of peat, a bit of clay, paper, or other biodegradable material, and some seeds all packed together in a nice little ball. Then imagine throwing that little ball (or “bomb”) into an empty lot somewhere. Finally, imagine that “bomb” creating an explosion of flowers and other native plants in that empty lot (with a little help from the sun and rain, of course).

And the best part is, there are ways you can get involved! [Read more...]

The Spongey-ness of Human Genes

Have you ever heard the phrase “he soaks up information like a sponge”? Well, recent studies show that the phrase might not be that far from the truth.

Published in the journal Nature, a study conducted by Australian scientists showed proof of links between humans and an unexpected source: The Sea Sponge.

Sure, it may be easy to compare the human species to chimpanzees and other primates, but according to this study, Sea Sponges and humans share nearly 70% of the same genes! [Read more...]

Botanicalls: Allows Plants to Contact You via Twitter When They’re Thirsty!

I enjoy growing plants, especially indoors. Practically all my window space (and then some) is taken up by plants–herbs, cacti, flowers, you name it.

If you’re an avid lover of plants or have plants of your own, then you’re probably aware of all the care they require and how easy it can be to make mistakes–especially when it comes to watering. We all know they don’t get the same amount of water, but how much is too much or too little? And how often should you water them? Do you let the soil go dry or should you keep it constantly moist?

Well, guess what. There’s a new invention that eliminates all the guesswork and makes at least one phase of plant care 100 times easier. [Read more...]

This is the Spill That Never Ends, Yes it Goes On and On, My Friends…

It’s officially the 100th day since the Gulf Coast Oil Spill disaster started.

What does this mean?

Well, to break down the news as of late: the clean up is still going on and most likely won’t end for a long time yet, endangered baby turtles are being released into the gulf (despite the fact that there is still oil), and the highly damnable BP chief exec, Tony Hayward, is finally on his way out (he quit! huzzah!).

Ah, but wait, there’s more… [Read More...]

The Live Lamp.

I’ve stumbled across an interesting device available on Etsy. It’s an orb. It’s a lamp. It’s a plant growth system. It’s all those things packed into one spiffy little creation: The Live Lamp.

In its most basic form, this is nothing more than a lamp that’s shaped like a sphere or ball. However, it’s uniqueness comes from the fact that plants grow ON it. Not in it, not around it, they live and grow directly on the light itself.

What plant could possibly do that? [Read more...]

Help Plant A Billion Trees!

One of my favorite organizations is doing a very awesome thing.

The Nature Conservancy is working to restore 2.5 million acres of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. For those of you that don’t know much about this forest: Only 7% of it’s original area (which spanned a distance from the state of Maine down to South Carolina) remains and it’s one of the world’s most endangered tropical forests.

Over the next 7 years they plan to plant 1 billion trees and this is where your help comes in. All it takes is $1.00.  One dollar. For every dollar you donate, they will plant a tree. [Read more...]
